IDE MPLAB ICE 4000 USB Device Driver First Time Installation For Windows 2000 and XP |
| To use MPLAB ICE 4000 with USB communications, the following steps MUST be taken in order to properly install the device drivers. |
| USB Preliminaries
MPLAB ICE 4000 should NOT be plugged
into a USB
port, powered, or plugged into a target board at this time.

| Software Preliminaries
Install the latest version of MPLAB IDE. You can get a free copy of this application from our website (http://www.microchip.com) or from your local Microchip sales office on CD-ROM. During the install, dialogs may pop up stating, "The software you are installing for this hardware: Microchip Development Tool has not passed Windows Logo testing..." In this case, Microchip Development Tool will be:

| STEP 1
Connect MPLAB ICE 4000 to the PC with a USB cable. Then, connect the power supply and turn on the unit. If you are using an external USB HUB, make sure it has a power supply and is powered or MPLAB ICE 4000 will not work. |

| STEP 2 - Windows XP SP2
If you have service pack 2, the first time a new USB device is plugged into a Windows XP system, this dialog box will appear indicating that the system has found a new hardware device and asking you whether or not to search for update software. Select "No, not this time". Click "Next" and continue with the steps below. |

| STEP 3
The first time a new USB device is plugged in, a small dialog box will appear indicating that the system has found a new hardware device. There also may be a dialog box that informs the user that a device data base is being built or updated. After these dialogs appear, the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box is displayed. Select "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" and click "Next" to continue the installation. Note: If you are running Windows 2000, you may not see this dialog or the next 3 dialogs. Instead, the system will automatically install the software without asking you. This is OK. Proceed to Step 7. |

| STEP 4
During the install, a dialog will pop up stating, "The software you are installing for this hardware: Microchip Development Tool has not passed Windows Logo testing..." In this case, Microchip Development Tool will be "Microchip MPLAB ICE 4000 Firmware Loader". Click "Continue Anyway". (See "Software Preliminaries" for a picture of this dialog.) The "Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard" will appear once the Microchip MPLAB ICE 4000 Firmware Loader has been installed. Click "Finish" to end this installation and begin the install of the Firmware Client.. |

| STEP 5
A small dialog box will appear indicating that the system completed adding a hardware device, immediately followed by the statement that it has found a new hardware device. After this dialog appears, the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box is displayed again, this time to install the Microchip MPLAB ICE 4000 Firmware Client. Select "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" and click "Next" to continue the installation.

| STEP 6
During the install, a dialog will pop up stating, "The software you are installing for this hardware: Microchip Development Tool has not passed Windows Logo testing..." In this case, Microchip Development Tool will be "Microchip MPLAB ICE 4000 Firmware Client". Click "Continue Anyway". (See "Software Preliminaries" for a picture of this dialog.) The "Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard" will appear once the Microchip MPLAB ICE 4000 Firmware Client has been installed. Click "Finish" to end the USB installation. |

| STEP 7
Verify that the driver installed by viewing the Device Manager*, Microchip Tools section. *To open the Device Manager window, click Start>Settings>Control Panel. In Contorl Panel, double click System. In System Properties, Hardware tab, click Device Manager. |
